I was once in a classroom with a Spanish speaking female student. She was the sweetest child ever, but was very reserved and would not participate in many of the lessons and activities. She would not socialize with any of her classmates and even while at recess, she would look for her Spanish speaking friends in other classes to play with. There would be times they were absent and the student would then, play alone. To assist her in feeling more comfortable, the teacher provided services of an ELL teacher to sit with her during ELA/reading block time. This is when we would see more of her personality come alive. She enjoyed when our read-a-louds would consist of Spanish words because the teacher would ask her if she was pronouncing the word correctly and the student would correct her with a smile. So, although we teach our ELL students English and know that they struggle due to a language/cultural barrier, it is also up to us to incorporate their lifestyles into our learning. comment as you see fit. min 75 words.
