This is the second of four required reflection journal entries you are required to write about your learning in this class since the last journal. Each needs to be, at a minimum, 250 words long, but there is no upward limit. More important than the number of words will be what you put in your journal entires:Journal entries must not just be summaries of content or repetitions of facts or a repeat of what you already said in discussion. They should be about what you see as the relevance or meaning of the facts/events you learned about. They should also be where you process feedback you received and address constructive criticism. To illustrate:A journal entry that says “…I learned that Theodore Roosevelt sent the US Navy to the Philippines” simply lists a fact you have learned. My response would probably be “Oh yeah? So what?”A journal entry that says “…learning that Theodore Roosevelt was an early proponent of US empire made me think that maybe the US was not all that different from those European nations who were carving up Africa and Asia amongst themselves…” would be the start of a reflection: Here is why:You are doing more than stating a fact. And you are doing more than just “speaking from your gut”. You are talking about something you would have evidence for (=Roosevelt talking about US expansion before it happened), but you are then giving me your own take on it (= your personal reflection about that verifiable fact). See the difference? If not, ask for clarification! For a perfect score I would still expect you to develop the thought a step further: So what? Let’s assume you are right, does this change or affect your understanding of US history? How so? Explain! If you have not already done so, please make sure you look at feedback you might have gotten from me on your first journal, and at the rubric score.
