Ethics in Social Work
The importance of ethical practice has been well recognised in social work and human
services. Social workers must have a professional commitment to social work values and
ethics, having strong interpersonal skills and empathy for their clients. Ethical practice is
informed by theory and knowledge, as well as (more importantly) by the social worker’s
reflection on their own behaviour, character or attitudes.
In this reflective journal,
• Describe a time when your morals/ethics might have been questioned or challenged.
Identify your emotions that were present at that time. Reflect on that experience. (30%)
• Critically analyse your own experience with reference to social work professional ethics.
How will you act if a similar situation occurs in your social work practice? How do you
think the AASW Code of Ethics would affect your work? (40%)
• Professional, academic presentation with proper referencing (30%)
When completing your reflective journal, ensure that you:
• Write a real-life situation in the first person
• Describe what you did and felt in the past situation
• Demonstrate the links you make between theory and practice
• Maintain confidentiality by protecting people’s identifying details
You are required to use at least two references (social work textbooks or journal articles), in
addition to the Code of Ethics of the AASW, to support your reflection in this task.
