Min 50 words. Keeping student information confidential is vital as a special education teacher for many reasons. The most important, being that it is a legal obligation to ensure that students information remains safe. In my own day-to-day practices I ensure that I always lock my computer and have a password so that way no information can be accessed unless it is by me. My schedule that I carry around with me for all of my students receiving services is inside of a clipboard that is by my side at all times, that way there is a cover that is blocking it from other students and adults to be able to see. When printing IEPs, I am next to the printer the moment I press the print button to ensure that I am the only one who sees it. I also keep any confidential information locked up inside of the SPED room at the end of the night so there is no possibility of it coming home with me. If I need the information at home, it is normally accessed virtually, my computer locks and is something that I can ensure remains safe in my home. This is all the same for all students even if they aren’t in SPED. If I do inclusion with another student who is not in SPED and a student on my caseload and they share a document, I would ensure that that students information is also confidential. Comment as you see fit.
