Explain what it means to think sociologically. What does this way of thinking include? Information from our first lecture, “What is sociology?”, should shape your response to this question. (5 marks)
Provide a brief, but clear summary of the article. Hint: A good summary assumes the reader of the summary knows nothing about what you are summarizing and provides them with the context and details they need to understand the article without reading it. (5 Marks)
Using what you’ve learned about sociology so far (especially from the week on “What is Sociology?”), what makes this blog post sociological? How is the author thinking/talking about the topic? How are they applying the sociological perspective (i.e. the sociological imagination, making the familiar strange, etc.)? (10 marks)
Questions to ask yourself (do not explicitly answer these questions, use them to guide your thinking):
What level is the author writing about (e.g. micro, macro, global)?
Is the author identifying patterns or themes that affect entire social groups?
Are they connecting a seemingly individual problem or experience to society?
Are they discussing history, social structures and/or agency? How?
Are they questioning a ‘natural’ or ‘normal’ part of social life? How?
Are they considering different perspectives and experiences?
Reflecting on your blog post and the other posts you read, why do you think sociology is important for understanding our world? How do you think sociology will help prepare you for your career? Be as specific as possible. (5 Marks)
