What social workers do and assumptions in social work
Social work is often described as what social workers do. However, social workers might have some assumptions about notions of helping (or working with different client groups) in their practice (Maidment & Egan, 2009). It is crucial for social work professionals to understand such assumptions, and respect clients’ rights to make choices for themselves based on their own personal needs and values.
To understand what social workers do and to identify and challenge social work assumptions, (1) meet up with a social worker and discuss the assumptions that might affect her/his judgment and ability to utilise professional values; (2) critically reflect on your interaction with the social worker focusing on those assumptions identified.
In your reflective journal,
Describe your experience of interacting with the social worker(s);
Comment on the assumptions you have identified when interacting with the social worker;
Critically analyse the assumptions addressed, using social work literature;
Explore some of the assumptions you might have in working with different client groups.
When completing your reflective journal, ensure that you:
Write a real-life situation in the first person
Describe what you did and felt in the past situation
Demonstrate the links you make between theory and practice
Maintain confidentiality by protecting people’s identifying details
For this reflection, you should have an interaction with a social worker(s) (alone or in a group) to discuss the assumptions that they might have in diverse practice settings. Your conversation about assumptions or biases can be emotionally laden, and thus should be handled cautiously and sensitively. Prior to your interview, familiarise yourself with the AASW Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice, and consider any potential ethical issues that might arise.
You are required to use at least two references (social work textbooks or journal articles) to support your reflection in this task.
–
This journal entry should not exceed 300 words in length (including titles, subheadings and in-
text citations, but not including the reference list).
–
You must provide an accurate word count at the end of your journal (before the reference list)
–
Any text over the word limit will not be read (meaning that the marker will not include any work after the maximum word limit has been reached)
(Due: 4 April 2022 via Turnitin,
assessments received after this date will be penalised
