Min 75 words. It’s amazing how it’s already been the first five weeks! Student teaching is going so fast and I’m doing my best to cherish every moment. My most rewarding experiences that have made me a more effective teacher has been having a supportive mentor, GCU faculty supervisor, and professor. My mentor always does her best to give me feedback and I take it, I learn from it, and then I learn how to make an impact on others. Student teaching can be fast paced at times, and I have learned to do my best to keep especially when it comes to team meetings and lesson planning. I’ve learned and implemented some helpful techniques for students who might say discouraging things. Just the other day a student was putting themselves down for not understanding a math problem. I told them, “You got this!”
I did my best to help the student and I gave them a quick mini lesson to help them understand a little better. I’ve learned that identifying a struggling student or students early can benefit them, because the sooner a teacher knows the better. The sooner a teacher knows then they can provide that student with more practice problems or provide more examples on the board for all students. My challenging experience was making sure students are on task! I remember my first week with students, I struggled with gaining their attention. My mentor teacher gave me the suggestion that it’s key to make sure all students are focused and have eyes on you before speaking. Otherwise, students will not be focused. She told me to address it quickly too, and to give students reminders on the importance of paying attention and staying on task. Also, to point out good behaviors such as “I like the way so and so is sitting on the rug and waiting patiently for the story to begin.
