Children need an environment that helps them feel secure. They depend on adults for all their basic needs, including protecting them from harm. When you feel safe, it builds relationships and helps in learning comfortably and with confidence. Children are not fully aware of what may cause injury. They are unaware of cause and effect and lack impulse control, so we as teachers must teach and prevent . Two safety management procedures are, having emergency plans in place and teacher/staff ratio.
Emergency plans: emergency plans for fire drills, lockdowns, and severe weather are important to have in place in case any of these actions happen in real time. We teach children from a young age these procedures by practicing throughout the months of the academic school year on how and what to do during these times and making sure to express how important it is to follow instructions so that we all can remain safe. Safety plans are also good to have in place for the substitute teacher, in any case the day to day teacher is absent, so that the substitute is aware of procedure.
Teacher/Staff ratio: this safety procedure is important in any case with students, but especially for infants and young children. At this age there is a greater risk for mishaps. It is not safe for one teacher to manage over three to four infants in a classroom or more than four toddlers in a classroom setting. They are so inquisitive at this age and a teacher must be able to keep her eyes and ears alert and ready in a safe manner
