Framing behavior that violates our internal code as instead complying with our code using language that complies with our code to describe actions that violate our code : convincing yourself that the action that violates your code would contribute to a social outcome that complies with your code : comparing the action that violates your code to something even worse, justifying the action as the less bad option.
Distorting consequences or reducing our personal responsibility for outcomes : attributing responsibility for the action to someone else (“just following orders”)
: reducing personal accountability by claiming group pressure is responsible (“everyone does it”, ?”it’s part of playing the game”)
: convince yourself that the possible negative consequences are less serious than they are
Framing the victims of our action as different from ourselves convince yourself that those who will be harmed are less worthy than you or people like you (this plays on the human tendency for “homophily” in which we value people we believe are like us more than people we believe are different from us)
: attribute responsibility for your action to those harmed by it (victim blaming, “if they worked harder, this wouldn’t have happened”)
Attribution of blame
Euphemistic language
Distorting consequences
Displacement of responsibility
Diffusion of responsibility
Moral justification
Advantageous comparison
