A functional behavioral assessment or otherwise known as an FBA is a method for finding the underlining reason for a child’s behavior. For example, a child who hits and kicks a lot may have an FBA to determine what the purpose of the behavior being displayed is. The environment and the people in it, can be a factor of the child’s behavior. An ABC data chart or Antecedent-Behavior-Consequence, is data collected to clarify the nature and purpose of the behavior in the environment. This can be collected by an individual teacher, parents, and other professionals.
Both an FBA and ABC can help educators support positive behaviors in their students by praising students for appropriate behavior and working on diminishing the problem behaviors. For example, if a student often runs around the room when trying to avoid their work, the teacher may praise or reward the child when sitting in their spot. The teacher may have consequences for every time the child runs around the room like taking away 1 minute of recess.
In my practicum classroom, there a specific student with an FBA who throws things when frustrated. Depending on the multitude of the behavior, we will move students away from the student throwing and will either ignore them or try multiple ways to help de-escalate him. When they are calmed down the student is directed to pick up all the things they threw. That is his consequence for throwing. comment as you see fit. min 75 words

FBA or functional behavioral assessments is a process for schools to use to help find what is causing a challenging behavior. These assessments help the schools to come up with strategies or solutions that can help diminish the behaviors or resolve them. An FBA is focused on the behavior of student. Kids will act a certain way for many reasons an FBA will help find those reasons and suggest ways to change it. Example would be that the student is good in Math, but when they need to do a math word problem the student starts to act out, screaming, yelling, and running around. The first step is to define the challenging behavior. “The student throws chairs and doesn’t respond when asked to solve the word math problem.” Then the FBA team (personnel trained in understanding the behavior, teachers, the student, and their families) will gather information. School records, interview other staff members, test the student in certain areas. The goal is to answer these questions, When and where is the behavior happening? Where is it not happening? How often is it occurring? Who is involved or around when it does? What happens right before and right after the behavior? If the student is old enough to help, they can provide information as well. Using the data and all other information collected the team can deliberate on what is causing the behavior. “Student is avoiding doing word math problems, because they struggle with reading them.” Finally, the team will make a plan. Have the student work with an associate one on one, have student use pictures, give student extra time, or give to student ahead of time to practice (Lee, n.d.).
ABC data is a recording of what is happening before, during and after the behavior. The (A)antecedent is what comes before the behavior. (B) is the behavior, what does it look like, sound like? (C) Consequence or what event happened right after the behavior?
Implementing the use of FBAs can help reinforce positive behaviors. When you can identify the behavior and what is causing it, you can teach the students how to recognize their triggers and learn how to use a replacement behavior.
We have a few students that have observations on them daily. They record the behavior, and what they were doing at the time. The observations don’t always include the antecedent or the consequence. I do believe that these students would benefit from knowing this information and could help prevent these behaviors. comment as you see fit. min 75 words
