Often children birth to age 2 exhibit difficult and challenging behaviors. How you react to these behaviors in a classroom is very important. In this assignment you will explore different ways to deal with challenging behaviors. What works for one teacher may not work for others so researching different options is important.
Create a 12 slide presentation that explores how to support infants and toddlers with challenging behaviors. Your presentation should include the following:
Describe ways to assess progress in the five developmental domains, play, and temperament.
Describe the roles, responsibilities, and processes related to integrating assessment results in the development and implementation of individualized plans.
Describe the importance of providing social and emotional support to young children, as well as strategies to address challenging behaviors.
Include a title page, speaker’s notes, and reference page.
Support your findings with 3-5 research-based sources.
While APA format is not required for the body of this assignment, solid academic writing is expected, and in-text citations and references should be presented using APA documentation guidelines, which can be found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center.
This assignment uses a rubric (file attached). Review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion.

Challenging behavior can be referred to as any behavior that interferes with the learning or engagement of children in pro-social interactions with their peers and others around them (Division for Early Education, (DEC), 2017). These behaviors can sometimes cause self-injury or physical aggression (DEC, 2017).
There are several factors which contribute to challenging behaviors in young children. These include their environment, development, socio-cultural factors, and unmet needs (Dec, 2017). There are times when challenging behaviors can be indications of health issues or some underlying developmental, social or emotional problems (Dec, 2017). Some children may lack the developmental skills they need to conduct themselves as expected. The brain in children is still being developed and the amygdala and the prefrontal cortex influence challenging behaviors (Marion, 20150. The amygdala is fully operative at birth and controls and directs the actions relating to matters of emotion (Marion, 2015).
If the environment a child is in is toxic, abusive, aggressive, then the child will believe that these behaviors are acceptable and will exhibit them in the classroom. The environment in the classroom too should be one where children feel protected, safe, loved, and cared for. Their basic needs of feeling loved, appreciated, safe and secure, medical and dental care, should be met to avoid the emergence of challenging behaviors (Marion, 2015).
Many children do not know how to handle some of the things they may face each day, and this can result in the showing of behaviors which are unacceptable.
Schools will differ on the methods they will use to address challenging behaviors. At the placement I am at we do a lot of redirecting and giving children choices. Depending on the exhibited behavior there are times when they will be taken to a quiet spot to calm down and then talk about what is happening to them. Discussions are held with families to see what the underlying causes could be so there can be some help extended. There are also other entities which families can be referred to, so they get professional help for both the children and the families as necessary. Families are also encouraged to talk to their children’s primary care doctor who is better positioned to give referrals and advice. Comment as you see fit. Min 75 words

So many factors can contribute to a behavior. The environment that the child lives in and learns in, and their medical concerns are all factors that affect the child’s behaviors. A few others include the social attention from others. When a student does something and other react to it, they get attention, and they might like getting this attention. In my last placement, my mentor taught the students private eyes. If they notice someone making bad choices, to look away and not give them any attention. This will only give them opportunities to keep doing what they are not supposed to be doing. Also, if a student is in the hallway or in another room, and you walked by, you need to ask yourself, if I was that student would I want others to stare at me when?
Some students chose challenging behaviors to cover up that they do not know how to do something, or they do not understand what is going on. If the student is learning their letter sounds and doesn’t know them, they could act out such as crying, throwing things, runaway. If the teacher is constantly sending the student to the principal’s office because of their actions, they will learn quickly that they can do these behaviors and get out of doing the work.
Just yesterday one of our students likes visual cues. The teacher has cards to show him what he needs to be doing. He really enjoys them however he enjoyed them to much he started doing the unwanted behaviors just so he can see the cards. He kept repeating “Stop Card” and laughing and smiling.
Our school has a counselor who is available for all students and their families. I have talked with the counselor many times about my twins. We recently just added a school-based therapist to our school. My twins will be attending sessions with her during the school day.
The school has a positive behavior ticket program. Any teacher can award a student with tickets for good, positive behaviors. The students get to spend their tickets at the Rams store. Prizes include pop-its, candy, erasers, other fidgets, bracelets, stickers, & more. They can also spend their tickets on buying a class party, PJ Day, lunch with a favorite teacher, or extra recess for their class. comment as you see fit. Min 75 words
