(Disclaimer: For someone like myself who feels like I am a superwoman and can heal the world because I do try my best to.) I have learned that not every situation is going to be a successful one and it is okay. There were times when the student I observed did not participate, relate, or adhere to my suggestions, activities or even my presence. He still had tantrums. He still got up uninterested. He did not want to participate or interact in a few activities, etc. And I must admit, it is a feeling of feeling like you have failed. But! I kept trying different strategies, utilizing the DARE model making small changes in what I will do differently the following day.
I have always worked alongside a veteran teacher who I am always in awe with and hope to one day reach their level of grace, patience, creativity, and knowledge. One thing I will always appreciate and have been so blessed to experience while working with these wonderful ladies was their interest in my input. With that said, assistance/help, not being afraid to ask questions or for suggestions from my fellow colleagues whether it be from the para-educator, intern, specialists, fellow teachers, or parents are important. I was so lucky to have a mentor teacher, as well as her assistant to guide me, instead of making such comments as, “we’ve tried that already” or “that will not work,” and it makes an enormous difference in the learning experience.
