I would greatly appreciate partnering and collaborating with my students’ family/guardians with a positive outlook and compassion which includes a respectful and transparent relationship with reciprocal communication, informational and empathetic listening, and understanding and knowledge of their current position (emotionally, physically, resources, support, adversities, etc.), concerns, and viewpoints while encouraging them to be actively involved in their child’s learning, target setting/goals and development. I want their voices to be recognized and heard and their procedural safeguards known, respected, and adhered to while following and providing the appropriate and developmentally appropriate services and supports under the IDEA for their child.
As a Christian, parent, and educator it is important to remember that not only is every child different, but so are their parents/guardians with respect to their child’s abilities, disabilities, and delays, and how they either accept or do not accept their diagnosis and how involved or uninvolved they want to be in their child’s development. I will remain professional while not taking what they say or do personally but knowing that I am advocating for the appropriate services and supports their child is entitled to while providing concrete information and explanations as to why the goals, accommodations, modifications, etc., are written the way they are. I will refer to my professional, ethical, and legal resources to keep me on the right track as an Early Childhood Educator and to always reflect on what was said and done to be a better person.
