Your assignment is to write an original literature review on a topic of your choice. The literature review should be 3000 words, include a short introduction explain the purpose, background and rationale for the research question addressed by your review; a main section where you critically review a body of literature, organized into key themes, developing a critical narrative to address the research question set out in the introduction; and a brief conclusion, where you present a balanced answer to the research question, noting areas where the evidence requires further attention, strengthening or review. You also provide an appendix, which is marked but not counted in the word limit. This reports the literature search and retrieval strategy that you used, and documents how you identified selected and ended up with the literature in your review. This does not require a narrative of the search process. Only tables and flow chart or decision tree are expected. The detail must be sufficient for someone else to replicate the search. Note that this appendix is marked and so it is an exception to the guidance in the Postgraduate Students’ Handbook.
The length of the literature review is 3,000 words (not including references and appendix).
Introduction (400 words)
– Scope (what? definitions? background/ context)
– Rationale (why? significance?)
This also covers FINER – interest, novel/need, relevance – Research aim (purpose of the study)

– Choice of method and congruence with aim

– Brief description of analysis technique and review process
Results (2000 words)
– The actual literature review
– Style depends on type of review (narrative, thematic etc.) but all reviews should be integrated and critical
– Synthesis NOT an annotated bibliography
Multiple sources in each paragraph
Evaluate the evidence, based on critical appraisal of the literature you included
Weigh differences and contradictions
Conclusion (200 words)
– Summary of key findings (not just repeating what has already been said but creating new statement that answers/ responds to the research question)
– Critical comment on the strength of conclusions (consistency, credibility, completeness VS. tensions, uncertainty and gaps)
– Implications (so what? link findings back to setting and rationale from the introduction)
Reference list (not in the word count)
– In the School style
– Complete list of all sources cited
– All statements of fact should be supported by at least one reference; evidence should be proportionate to the size of the statement
– Multiple references should be used wherever possible (this comes from synthesising across sources rather than summarising individual publications)
Appendix (not in the word count)
– Search strategy
search terms and any operators (how the terms were combined), sources, inclusion and exclusion criteria, limiters
PRISMA flow diagram template, detailing the process
