“I don’t want one drink. I want ten drinks,” says Leo, White House Chief of Staff in the series The West Wing. Addiction is not consumption. Consuming drugs does not make a person an addict. It is the urge, the need, and the physical and psychological withdrawal symptoms that describe addiction. The more a person depends on a chemical substance for emotional or physical reasons, the more that person develops a tolerance. A person who does not consume psychoactive drugs but has experienced the chemical and psychological dependence first went through a detox phase and a rehabilitation phase. Relapse often happens.
